Formal
A ‘basic’ rate of interest used by banks for setting the charge structure for customers with overdrafts and loans. Actual charges are usually higher than this base depending upon amount involved and risk profile.
Real-world Example
The Bank of England sets a base rate of 5%. A high-street bank then lends to customers at base rate plus 3%, i.e. 8%, depending on the customer's credit risk.
