A statistical technique used by financial institutions to determine how much money to lend to a (potential) customer. This allocates scores based upon past performance, profitability, assets in the business etc.

Real-world Example

An online lender uses credit scoring to instantly assess an applicant's likelihood of repaying a loan, based on their credit history and financial behaviour, before deciding whether to approve it.
