Formal
A term used to describe the distribution of company profits to the ordinary stockholders of the business. Dividends are paid per share - and therefore reflect the share of total distributed profits based upon numbers of shares held.
Real-world Example
A profitable company pays shareholders $0.50 per share as a dividend, distributing some of its profit directly to investors rather than reinvesting all of it in the business.
