Covenant

Formal

A promise given by a person or business that certain acts will be performed or refrained from. Covenants typically relate to the protection of bank’s interests against loans provided.

Real-world Example

A company's loan agreement includes a covenant requiring it to keep its debt-to-equity ratio below 2:1. If it breaches that covenant, the lender can demand early repayment.
